April 4, 2006 - SCAR 2006 Annual Meeting: April 27-30 in Austin, Texas

April 4, 2006 – Great Falls, VA – The Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) will host its 2006 Annual Meeting Thursday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30 in Austin, Texas. The theme for the meeting is “Imaging Informatics in Focus.” The SCAR Annual Meeting is a leading scientific and educational meeting that features practical, hand-on sessions and content as well as technical exhibits from more than 145 vendors in the medical imaging field.

A pre-conference symposium on Wednesday, April 26, explores practical tools for the Imaging Informatics (PACS) administrator and includes breakout tracks for those with RT and IT backgrounds.

SCAR welcomes two esteemed keynote speakers to the 2006 program. Ben Shneiderman, PhD, provides the Opening General Session keynote addressing next-generation user interfaces for medical informatics on Thursday. Shneiderman is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland and founding director of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL). Douglas Lenat, PhD, president and CEO of Austin-based Cycorp and one of the founders of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) movement, discusses “computers vs. common sense” in his Closing General Session keynote address on Sunday.

The program includes seven scientific sessions plus a poster and demonstration session; a DICOM calibration workshop; the 6th SCAR R&D Symposium; 13 SCAR University educational sessions; 10 special sessions; six roundtable breakfast discussions; and tours of Austin facilities sponsored by the Austin Radiological Association. New SCAR officers will be elected during the Annual Membership Meeting on Friday, and a new member of the College of SCAR Fellows will be inducted as well.

SCAR Chair Richard L. Morin, PhD, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, will have major announcements concerning SCAR’s future direction and SCAR’s Imaging Informatics Certification Program during Thursday’s Opening General Session. Morin will be available at a SCAR press conference at 12:00 noon on Thursday to answer questions, along with Certification Committee Chair J. Anthony Seibert, PhD; incoming SCAR Chair Curtis P. Langlotz, MD, PhD; and Annual Meeting Program Committee Chair Bradley J. Erickson, MD, PhD. Keynote speaker Ben Shneiderman will also be available for questions at the press conference.

Two 2006 SCAR Resident Scholarships will be presented at the third SCAR Media Breakfast, Friday morning. The Resident Scholarships and Media Breakfast are sponsored by SCAR and Siemens Display Technologies.

The SCAR 2006 Scientific Program is dedicated to Roger A. Bauman, MD, a founding SCAR leader and founding editor of SCAR’s peer-reviewed journal, the Journal of Digital Imaging. The 3rd Annual Bauman Award for Best Student Paper will be presented during the Closing General Session.
